Sebelumnya : Sample Interview for Engineer
1. Q : How long should one wait before shutting down the engine room and inert gas after a fire has started?
A : As soon as it is realized that the fire cannot be extinguished, Close all fire dampers, Close fuel shut-off valves and sound alarm flood engine room with CO2 or halon depending on system and wait. Cool bulkheads if at all possible.

2. Q : How long should one wait after inerting the engine?
A : Wait at least 30 minutes and slowly open the vents. Do not enter engine rooms without a SCBA set or Scot Air pack with a safety line.

3. Q : With reference to vessel which you are serving on, give the following details?
A : 1. Draft of vessel on summer load line (SLL) (Feet)?
2. Breadth (feet)?
3. Depth moulded?
4. Main Deck Area (Square feet)?
5. Gross registered Tonnage (Tons)
6. Speed at 10% MCR (Fully Loaded to SLL)?
(Obtained details from vessel)

4. Q : What manufacturer of Main Engine fitted and the power at 100% MCR?
A : (Obtain details from vessel)

5. Q : Type of generator, Number and Power Rating?
A : (Obtain details from vessel)

6. Q : Describe the maintenance given to the extinguishers and method of recharge?
A : Check safety tag to ensure that inspected within the Last 3 months and have been recharged within the last 6 months (done ashore by fire department)

7. Q : What is the cause of action to be taken after a fire hose has been used?
A : With a canvas hose, leave to dry by hanging then re-stow, with a rubber lines hose re-stow immediately for further use.

8. Q : How many live buoy rings are fitted on your vessel and location?
A : Give name of your vessel, number fitted and locations.

9. Q : How do you identify a lifebuoy ring as belonging to your vessel.
A : By the name of vessel and port of registry.

10. Q : What is fitted or attached to a lifebuoy ring?
A : A self igniting light and a flare (self igniting).

11. Q : Give the length of line fitted to lifebuoy rings?
A :  30 metres in case of my vessel.

12. Q : Why is it necessary to carry out maintenance to engine?
A : in order to prolong the life of the engine and ensure trouble free operation.

13. Q : What is the function of lubricating oil in the engine?
A : 1. To provide boundary lubrication when engine stopped.
2. To remove excess heat generated during operation of engine.
3. To provide a protective film oil when engine running, to reduce friction and wear of engine parts.

14. Q : How can lubricating oil in engines be used for long periods with being renewed?
A : In small high speed engines change oil every 300 hours to 500 hours as considered normal, with a caterpillar 3306 down engine must change at the most 500 hours due to fact that the governor is operated from the same oil that supplies the engine. Send oil samples ashore to be checked every three months or as required.

15. Q : On a high speed engine, what is the normal operating Fresh water temperature?
A : 85 degree centigrade.

16. Q : What alarms are fitted to engines to give warning of defect?
A : High fresh water temperature, Low Lubricating Oil Pressure is the minimum. A panel may be installed which as additional alarms such as no fresh water flow, low sump level, high exhaust temperature, Lubricating Oil differential pressure across filters.

17. Q : What will shut down engine in case of defect?
A : An engine will shutdown on high fresh water temperature, low lubricating oil pressure, overspeed, high crank case pressure, high bearing temperature, if fitted, high crank case temperature, crank case mist detector. these are a few examples.

18. Q : What is the use of an oily water separator?
A : An Oil Water Separator is to remove oil from an Oily water mixture to prevent contamination of the sea, fitted with a 15 ppm monitor. If the oil content of the discharged water exceed the specified limit an alarm will sound.

19. Q : Why is it necessary to cool engines?
A : To ensure that fixed metal and rotating parts of engines do not over heat.

20. Q : Some engines have turbo charges. What is a turbo charger?
A : To supply additional air to the engine and increase the power per cylinder, hence engine output.
